Burlesque Comedy Vocabulary
You don't know what to do this summer? Why not spent some time learning a few backstage words from old day Burlesque performers:
Skits - burlesque comedy, Jerk – audience member, Yock – a belly laugh, Talking woman – delivers lines in comedy skits, The asbestos is down – the audience is ignoring the jokes, From hunger – a lousy performer, Mountaineer – a new comic, fresh from the Catskill resort circuit, Trailer – the strut taken before a strip, Shimmy – Shake the posterior, Bump – swing the hips forward, Grind – full circle swing of the pelvis, Milk it – get an audience to demand encores.
You can find more information in H. M. Alexander's Strip Tease (Knight Publishers, NY, 1938). Source: The History of Musical (John Kenrick)
Back then, Strippers and Comedians shared the stage, but I guess comedians were doing less bumping and grinding. If you are only interested in the latter, why not check out Dita von Teese
